Your thoughts are the basis of our future. Your guide to this year¡¯s red dot award: design concept competition starts with this edict.

How would you like your world to look like? Your concepts and visionary ideas become our future, the possibility of flight, the impossible heights of today¡¯s buildings were all dreams and concepts realised.

Today, you have the opportunity to shape the future. Your ideas and concepts have no voice without an outlet, the red dot award: design concept is your platform to present your innovations.

We invite you to forge ahead boldly and make your ideas known. Take up the challenge to face an international jury panel of experts and take the recognition you deserve.

We look forward to your participation and wish you success in the red dot design award.

participation

To be eligible for the competition, the entrant must join as a red dot member. Membership entitles each person to:

  • Up to 2 submissions to the red dot award: design concept 2006
  • Exclusive download content at red dot online
  • Free entry for the adjudication workshop held with the 2006 jury in Singapore
  • 1 Free ticket to the red dot award: design concept 2006 awards celebrations
  • The red pass, which gives free unlimited entry to the red dot design museum for 1 year

Membership extends to all designers, design studios, companies, research laboratories, inventors, design professionals and students from anywhere in the world are eligible to enter. All kinds of inventions, novelty designs and aesthetic designs that are not in the market, and not produced for sale before 30 Nov 2006 are eligible for submissions. Award decisions are taken on the concept presentations directly by the jury during the adjudication process.

If you would like to submit more than 2 entries, additional submission are USD50 each.
All the prices stated are subject to a 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Conditions for entry
Submit detailed explanations, with pictures included, in A3 sized presentations. The explanations should also focus the novelty of the design concept. The judging criteria may also be used as a guide.

The presentation should preferably be no longer than 3 pages.

Include at the bottom right hand side of each page, in the following order:

  1. Title of work and registration number
  2. Designer¡¯s/Company name
  3. Competition category
  4. Page number

The presentations may be uploaded to red dot online after the registration is completed. To access the upload page, log on to http://www.red-dot.de, click on ¡¯design concept¡¯, on the right hand side of the page, click on ¡®registration 2006¡¯, and click on ¡®upload submission¡¯.

Inclusion as an exhibit in the red dot design museum,
Singapore and the online exhibition.

Subject to a fee, each award-winning product will be presented in the permanent exhibition in the red dot design museum and the online exhibition for at least one year. The presentation in the red dot design museum and in the online exhibition will be automatically extended by 12 months if they have not been terminated in writing by 30 November 2007. Presentation in the online exhibition corresponds to the presentation in text and pictures appearing in the Yearbook entry.

Inclusion in the Yearbook
Subject to a fee, each award-winning product will be presented in the Yearbook with at least a 1/2 (half) page of space. Winners of the ¡°red dot: best of the best¡± and the ¡°red dot: luminary¡± awards will be presented exclusively on 2/1 pages. Presentation in the Yearbook is binding on all red dot design award winners.

Communication Service
All winners automatically receive the basic package of the communication service. This consists of the data package for label use, the press service, the four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum, a special presentation in red dot design museum, Germany, a travelling presentation at various design tradeshows and a certificate for manufacturers and designers. Acceptance of this basic package is binding on all award winners.

Jury

The award¡¯s success has been largely due to the rigour through which entrants are judged. A highly qualified jury panel is selected annually, each authorities in their respective fields, maintain maximum independence and fairness in the process. These experts are the backbone of our competition.

Assessment Criteria

The jury¡¯s adjudication criteria
The submitted design concepts are evaluated according to the highest standards. The adjudication process follows a canon of strict criteria, which is constantly adapted to the latest findings in formal, technical, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. These criteria provide a guiding framework, which is filled in individually by each juror.

Degree of innovation
Is the product concept new in itself or does it supplement an existing product with a new, desirable quality?

Realisation possibility
Does current technology allow for the concept to be realised? If not with current technology, do you foresee the possibility of realisation in 1 to 3 years time?

Functionality and usefulness
Does the concept fulfil all requirements of handling, usability, safety, and maintenance? Does it fulfil a need or function?

Manufacturing efficiency
Can the concept be manufactured at a reasonable cost?

Ergonomics and human interface
Is the product concept adapted appropriately to the physical and, if necessary, psychic conditions of the user?

Emotional content & aesthetic quality
What does the product concept offer the user beyond its immediate practical purpose in terms of sensual quality, possibilities of a playful use or emotional attachment?
