| JCD Design Award 2005 Invitation to the Award for Overseas Interior Designers
Japanese Society of Commercial Space Designers (JCD)
The JCD Design Award is a prize specializing the only space design in Japan that the Japanese Society of Commercial Space Designers has given for 36 years every year. We have been opening the door to the overseas interior designers/architects since 2003 though JCD had targeted the design projects in Japan up to then. The JCD would like to invite spirited designers¡¯ projects from overseas as the third trial this year. It is our sincere hope that many foreign designers will join us.
The background of the JCD Design Award, the object of the Award, and other outlines are as follows:
Background The JCD Design Award was founded in 1974, in order to contribute to the improvement in qualitative and development of a commercial space design of Japan. JCD have awarded the prize to the design projects in Japan at the beginning. Because an excellent design is beyond the border and is supported by people all over the world, many of members of JCD are playing an active part not only in Japan but also in overseas recently.
We think it significant for the future of the design industry that the designer of Japan and Asia recognizes the outstanding work from a common viewpoint while the designers of Asia who play an active part in the world are increasing in number. Furthermore, the exchange of the designers of Asia and Japan is wished to become much more active by such trial.
Object of the Award We consider a commercial space widely not only in a store or a restaurant. That is, it includes a shopping center, a movie theater, a hotel, a gymnasium, a theater, an art museum, etc. Namely, JCD defines a commercial space as place that we shop, eat, drink, play and enjoy. From such a free viewpoint, we discover the outstanding design and grant the Award. www.dolcn.com
Recognition The award-winning projects will receive considerable recognition. They are carried by the design yearbook and introduced to various media.
Judging Members of the jury consist of the interior designers, the architects, the critics and so on. And JCD invites the guest jury each time, in order to choose the design projects from a still broader viewpoint. For example, the past guests are the prominent architects of overseas, such as Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi, Gaetano Pesce, Jean Nouvel, Ken Yeang and are Japanese artists such as Yoji Yamamoto, Amon Miyamoto and so on.
By such variegated juries, we can only rediscover not only beauty in the design but also the aspect of a present society, and elect the design that foresee tomorrow.
