Everything is reproduced in full color. You can actually read the fine print. The full television and radio commercial scripts and a complete index are included for reference.
Published each December, 74,000 copies of the Advertising Annual will be sold and distributed worldwide, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work.
The Advertising Annual incorporates special reproduction techniques developed by CA, including quality 175-line color separation and printing on premium 80 lb. coated paper by one of the finest printers in the United States. Everything that was originally in color is reproduced in color at a size that allows the concept to be understood.
Of the 14,731 entries to the 2001 Advertising Annual, 243 were accepted, making the CA Advertising Annual one of the most exclusive major advertising competitions in the world.

Eligibility All work must have been printed, published or aired for the first time between June 5, 2003 and June 4, 2004. Publication means an ad appeared in a form of mass media exposed to a substantial audience. Entries may originate from any country, but we need an English translation for the jurors. Submission of entries acknowledges the right of Communication Arts to use them for publication and exhibition.
Preparation of Audio/Visual Entries Television commercials must be on Beta SP or 3/4" U-matic Cassettes. Include 10 seconds of black, no slates or bars. Single tape commercials must be on individual cassettes. Television commercial series should be edited together on one cassette with 4 seconds of black between each spot. Radio commercials should be submitted on CD-ROM in either WAVE or AIFF file formats one file per entry. Radio commercial series should be submitted as one file with 2 seconds of silence between each spot. Web banner ads must be on CD-ROM. Tape Form B to the outside of each disk or video.
Preparation of Print Entries Submit ad tearsheets or proofs, unmounted and trimmed as published. Send brochures, folders, books, catalogs, etc., in bound form. For posters over 18" x 24," packaging, displays, signage, submit plastic or paper mounted 35mm slides. (Slides are projected for the judges.) Please do not send transparencies larger than 35mm. No glass mounts.
Accepted Entries Only accepted entries will be notified on or before September 12, 2004. Complete credits and any necessary material for the best possible reproduction in the Annuals will be requested at that time. Award of Excellence certificates for firms, individuals and clients will be mailed in January 2004.
Preparation of Packages Address packages to Communication Arts Advertising Annual 45. Non-United States contestants should mark each package ˇ°Materials for Contest Entry. No Commercial Value.ˇ± No provision will be made by CA for U.S. Customs or airport pickup. International entries should be sent by post or international courier. All entries must be received by June 4, 2004.
How the Judging Takes Place The nine jurors work in screening teams of three. Each category is distributed into three parts so each group screens one-third of the entries.
Print entries are spread out on tables by category. Most categories require several room setups. Each juror views the entries independently. Any juror can put an entry into the final voting by picking it up from the table. Television, radio and slide entries are selected by checking an ˇ°inˇ± or ˇ°outˇ± column on prepared scoring sheets.
For finals, all nine jurors work as a single team. In one hall, print entries are again spread out on tables by category. Two paper cups, one white and one red, with slots cut in the bottom, are placed upside down to the right of each entry. White cups are for ˇ°inˇ± votes, red cups for ˇ°outˇ± Each juror votes with different colored ceramic tiles by putting his or her tile in the appropriate cup.
After all the jurors finish voting on print, they move to another hall for television, radio or slides. Again, voting is done by each juror checking the ˇ°inˇ± or ˇ°outˇ± column on scoring sheets.
Meanwhile, in the print hall, if the votes do not total nine, a check of the tile colors tells the Communication Arts staff which juror has inadvertently missed that piece and he or she is called back to vote.
After the judges make their selections, their votes are tallied. A simple majority is usually required to place a finalist into the Annual.
