2nd Lightouch Design Competition

DesignSingapore Council and FLOS invite designers from around the world to create innovative lighting solutions for Lightouch Design Competiton 2007. For the 2007 design competition, designers are called to create a functional, adaptable, modular and scalable lighting system. The top entry will win the grand prize of a trip to Milan on business class and a learning tour to the FLOS factory. The designers for the eight best entries will be invited to Singapore next year for a prototyping workshop conducted by FLOS.

This is the second in the series of Lightouch design competitions. The first, which was held in 2003, attracted over 69 entries from countries in Asia, Europe, Australia and America. The Canadian entry by Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen of Forsythe and MacAllen Design won the top prize.

“Having received encouraging support from the design community and with more intense efforts put into the call for participation, we are targeting to increase the number of entries ten-fold to over 600 for the competition. DesignSingapore seeks to develop Lightouch as an avenue for designers to express, share and be recognized for their creative ideas. Through the educational seminars and workshops, we hope that participants will derive inspiration and excitement from learning new things and exchanging ideas,” says Dr Milton Tan, Director of DesignSingapore Council.

“Lightouch is a quest for a creative and interactive live-work-play environment that is shaped by a unique non-intrusive lighting system. It is about using light for its full spectrum of qualities, and less about lamps as technology, although this is inextricable from the form of light they shape,” Mr Maurizio Mussati, the Director of International Operations of FLOS reiterates.

“Light is everywhere, a sensory experience that encapsulates both physical and emotional nuances. Solutions to Lightouch will have to create an ambience that tranforms technological physicality into enlightened qualities of life. We are indeed very happy to support this year’s Lightouch design competition with the capabilities of Singapore’s most comprehensive design school,” Moses Wong, Director, Temasek Design School, Temasek Polytechnic.

Commenting on the competition, the 2003 winners Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen added, “Design competitions are the best way we know of to freely share ideas. The Lightouch competition is in the best spirit of open design competitions because the brief is so open to imaginative interpretation. Our prize for winning Lightouch was a profoundly inspiring visit to FLOS in Italy where we were able to get a tangible sense of how FLOS works which lead us to make a sculptural light. Called ‘love letter to the Castiglioni Brothers’, the light takes the form of an electroluminescent letter in tribute to the Castiglioni’s for the emotion and wit that they brought to their designs."

The underlying philosophy of Lightouch is that nobody has monopoly over good ideas. Designers, non-designers, professionals or students are all welcome to participate.

An international jury will judge the entries based on the originality of concept, its creativity in application of the concept of illumination, manufacturability and innovativeness in its application.

Lightouch Design Competiton is organised by DesignSingapore Council in partnership with FLOS and supported by Space Furniture and Temasek Polytechnic.
